Troubled Talk in Cross-cultural Business Emails. A digital Conversation Analysis of Interactions
2018
This study analyses the troubled talk occurring in an exchange of business emails between an Italian manufacturing company's general manager, his staff and their Pakistani consultants. The exchange is a communicative event in which conflicts (i.e. troubles) arise due to a variety of causes: the computer-mediated communication, the use of English as a Lingua Franca, the cultural differences between interactants and the stressful nature of the situation. Set in the tradition of studies which look at issues of intercultural differences in communication, (Katan 2006; Cucchi 2010; Manca 2016), this research addresses the question of the ongoing adaptation between high context and low context com…
Schweigen in Videokonferenzen: Vom Umgang mit Störungen in Online-Besprechungen
2020
This paper deals with silence in video-based discourse, which includes pauses and delays. The data of the study is provided by international video conferences in which six in-service teachers and six pre-service teachers from three countries (Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary) together with a moderator and an assistent discuss sequences of their lessons. These discussions are part of a teacher training progrmme as conceived and implemented in the Erasmus+ project LEELU (www.leelu.eu). The focus of the present study is to analyse through a multimodal approach how the above-mentioned moments of silence co-constitute the video-based interaction, and how the discourse is built up with the other m…

2019
Les maladies chroniques sont des affections non transmissibles de longue durée, parfois permanentes, qui évoluent avec le temps. Actuellement, c’est un français sur quatre qui souffre d’une maladie chronique, trois sur quatre après 65 ans. Ave…

Transmission delay in technology-mediated interaction at work
2015
This paper investigates transmission delay in technology-mediated interaction from a participant’s perspective. The approach chosen here contrasts with previous studies of delay: only what is seen, heard and done at one end (i.e., what is available on screen) is considered in the analysis. It is argued that participants themselves lack access to the other sides of their interactions as they unfold at remote locations, and they thus cannot observe and deal with delay from an outside perspective. Analyzing single cases of delay-ininteraction within the framework of conversation analysis, the focus is on dispersed conversation partners’ resources to detect a problem, and to make visible and re…
